Outstanding issues (grievances) with Company

The AFA Attorney is working on scheduling Arbitrations for the following: 1. Flight Attendant Termination  2. 70 hour line guarantee  3.  Commuter policy, AFA believes that a flight attendant may use the policy to go to recurrent training, the company disagrees. 4. Discipline for not carrying manual. 5. UAL contract (concessions in 2003). 6. Security Sweep.

Your Mec Officers request that if you have problems in any of the above issues, please contact your LEC President at once.

401 QUESTIONS

Mary Stevenson,  AFA Retirement Committee member has put together some information with regards to your 401k plan if you choose to leave the company. You can stay in the plan as long as you want to, but you cannot contribute to it any longer. You can also roll it into a new plan. If you have a loan, it would go into default and you would have to claim what was left on your taxes and file a 1099 form at tax time. If you choose just to take your money out and receive a check you will pay big taxes on that. Mary does not suggest doing that. The money is not fully vested until 7 years from date of hire. Any other questions, please contact Mary or local representative.

Reserve/Vacation

A few years back, your MEC worked with the company to sort out the pay/line guarantee for a reserve when she has vacation. The key is to look at the number of days off posted on the final bid award. Each f/a is guaranteed a minimum of 11 days off. For example, if the reserve award for the f/a shows only 9 days off and the f/a has vacation, then the f/a will receive an additional 6 hours (2 days under 11 at 3 hours of vacation pay) on top of the 70 hour line guarantee. If for example, she shows 12 days off and has vacation, she will not receive any additional time over 70 hours since she has her minimum days posted. Sue Voissem, who handles f/a payroll, is aware of how the reserve f/a should be paid in these cases. She counts the f/a reserve days and vacation days to determine if any overage is owed to the f/a. Remember that if the reserve f/a's final bid award shows her with less than 11 days off and she has vacation days listed, she will receive additional credit time above 70: however, the line is still "legal' per the contractual provision of the minimum days off because vacation days and days not on reserve count as days the f/a is free from duty.

Legislative:  AFA leaders are working hard lobbying congress to oppose cell phone usage onboard aircraft: to guarantee FMLA coverage for flight attendants: to discuss flight attendant fatigue: to support a homeland policy that makes sense: and to oppose privatization of social security.
